    • Choosing end mills with coating for dedicated work material is better. an Aluminum Titanium Nitride (AlTiN) coating increases hardness and temperature resistance in ferrous materials, but has a high affinity to aluminum, causing workpiece adhesion to the cutting tool. A Titanium Diboride (TiB2) coating, on the other hand, has an extremely low affinity to aluminum, and prevents cutting edge build-up and chip packing, and extends tool life.

  • Notes
    • The flutes on an endmill are helpful for chip evacuation but that is not their primary function. If the flutes where straight like reamers then all the cutting force would be in the radial direction. This would lead to varying load on the tool and cause deflection and chatter.
    • With the helix angle of the cutting edges wrap around the tool multiple times this means that the cutting action is distributed in more than one teeth and since they edges are at an angle to the cut, some of the force is directed in the axial component trying to pull the tool out of the holder.
